When it is this time of year` all I can think about is getting out on the ice and going ice fishing. But before I go I do something that helps so that I enjoy a productive day fishing. Through the years I have learned that when you are fishing on the ice your fishing reel gets cold, when it gets cold it does not work at its full potential, and sometimes not at all.
At the beginning of the ice fishing season I will disassemble my fishing reel and replace all of the grease on the inside of the reel (the gears) with a light grease. Clean the grease out of the reel with carb cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Make sure you take the spool off of the reel so that it does not get contaminated, the fish can smell this. I will use graphite or silicone because these act nicely when it is cold. Clean all of the residue off of the reel so when you are fishing it does not get on your hands. Now put the spool back on the reel with your clean hands. I have found that when I do this I have not had the reel stick, get tough to reel, or not work at all. This tip will help you enjoy your day more. Happy fishing and have an awesome day on the ice!
